Here, I try to keep up to date with events including workshops, lectures and exhibitions.  I hope you enjoy reading through it and maybe get a flavour of my working life as an artist and designer.
It was an extremely busy year for me last year and it looks like being the same again this year.  I am a bit of a workaholic so this is great!!

I began the year with a lovely visit to one of my favourite pubs!  Shibden Mill Inn in the Calder Valley.  The pub dates back to the sixteen hundreds and serves delicious food including delightful desserts.  Always a good way to start the year!!  Yummy, scrummy!!

I then blitzed my studio trying to get a bit more organised.  I have boxes overflowing with fabrics, wool fibres and other treasures that always seem to be in disarray. Dont think the reorganisation has made much difference but at least I tried!!

January has been spent building up my stock for both the forthcoming shows and my internet shops on Etsy and Folksy.  My hats are proving more popular than ever and I have lots of new designs that I am working on. The television production of Downton Abbey has been an inspiration for my new designs as has flowers, with a couple of commissions for snowdrop and bluebell hats for photography shoots, keeping me busy!

Busy busy, busy, so apologies for not keeping these pages up to date.  However, please look at my facebook page.....................Val Hughes Artist, which gives a brief synopsis of what I have been up to.

Well..................a bit of a chance to update my website so here goes!

February saw me in Manchester at the Stitching and Sewing Show with ICHF.  It was a wonderful show with lots going on.  I was very pleased with the responses I encountered about my stand and Alice in Wonderland lecture. Alice is proving very popular with my collection growing ever bigger.

It was great to be working with  The Phoenix Stitchers in Hampshire for a couple of days towards the end of February.  Alice was received with much fun and laughter.  Following the day lecturing, we had a workshop based on my Water, Snow and Ice Collection.  We created nuno felted panels, worked in sections with some great results being achieved.  Amidst my time with the Phoenix Stitchers, I had a lovely visit to Wisley Gardens near Guildford in Surrey.  Lots of inspiration for more felted flower hats!!

March saw me return to The Border Textiles Group, this time to lecture about 'Alice'. This is my third visit to Border Textiles and it was great to see everyone again in such wonderful surroundings too.  A few days later I was in Birmingham exhibiting and lecturing at the NEC.  Always a busy show but always well worth the effort!  : )

Busy time completing a new costume for my Water, Snow and Ice Collection.  A very wearable piece entitled 'Sea Spray' exhibited with the International Felt Makers Association at their AGM in Suffolk.  A big 'thankyou' to Lauren who endured freezing and blustery weather to model the dress for me before shipping.

The 8th May saw a return visit to Huddersfield Embroiderers Guild.  'Alice' joined me once again on the road and everyone had a Wonderful Wonderland time!

A three day show, mid may with International Craft and Hobby Fairs in lovely Harrogate.  The show was absolutely brilliant with a great response to my lecture and exhibition.  It was super to catch up with everyone again and some fun evening were had.  : )

A few days later, I was back in Cheshire.  This time it was to visit Frodsham Friday Felters, always a super group to spend time with.  This time I lectured on my Water, Snow and Ice Collection and a workshop creating felted vessels inspired by the theme was a great success.  Check out my facebook page for images of the time spent there.  I mixed work with leisure and was lucky enough to stay at Peckforton much to enjoy and to inspire!!!  I loved it!

Such, such fun!!  The lovely Charlotte Sugden invited me to work with her gorgeous Alpacas at her farm in West Yorkshire. The first workshop was creating vessels using the fleece from Raz, Sultan, Sovereign and  Thanos. I will be back later running a workshop creating felted landscapes and in August a childrens workshop. Watch this space!

Busy preparing for my two day summer school at Northlight Art Studios in Hebden Bridge.  This takes place on the 14th and 15th August.  We will experiment with different techniques and surface pattern including overlaying, distresssing and fusing with Bondaweb.  Machine and hand embroidery will be explored together with painting and dying our fabrics.  There will also be and opportunity to block print.  Come away with a series of samples or a finished piece suitable for framing.  Please contact:-

Work created by a student on a previous workshop.

The 21st of July me and the 'Alice Roadshow' went to Sheffield in South Yorkshire.  A lovely time was had by all including a delicious feast for their Summer Buffet.  I love my job!!  : )

So now we are into August!  On the 1st of August, I returned to The Alpaca Hut near Keighley to run a childrens workshop.  It was great fun!  We walked the alpacas and then created pictures of Raz, Sultan, Thanos and Sovereign using their fleece and a mixture of merino and British wools.  Some of the children were going to develop their pictures at home with stitch and others were ready to frame them.

For images of my recent adventures please see my facebook page.......Val Hughes Artist.  My website wont let me download for some reason GRRRRRRRR!!!
